Writing:
Each week, we write with partners at least once or twice, we write on our own, and we do some informational writing together as a whole group. We have been using various thinking maps as part of our writing not only during writing time, but also in reading, science, and math. We are focusing on opinion writing again this week, and we will also respond to books that connect to science and social studies lessons also.
Please encourage your child to write at home as well, because just like with reading and math, the more you write, the better writer you will be!I also put up a "Writing Checklist" when we write, so we remember all the important items to check for as writers, such as punctuation marks, capital letters, adding details and using describing words, spelling known words correctly and sounding out those words we are not sure how to spell. We also need to re-read what we wrote to make sure the sentences make sense and see if there is anything else we can add to our writing pieces.
Spelling: NO MORE TESTS THIS YEAR!
The words are posted on this site every weekend or on Monday. The hard copy of the words is sent home every Monday, and the homework is for the students to write each word 3 times each, then return in their Home Folders. I send them back every Tuesday. The PRETEST is on Thursdays, and the FINAL test (if needed) is on Fridays. If your child gets 100% on the pre-test on Thursday, they do not take the final test on Friday.
Math: We are reviewing various 2nd grade math concepts, doing hands-on practice with manipulatives, white boards, flash cards, and math games.
Social Studies: Scholastic News issues - we finished all 6 units.
Science: Take the test and finish journals for the plant unit.
Reading: We read with the whole group, small groups, and with partners. We also read Big Books, poster charts and daily message charts during our whole group instruction. We have been focusing on summarizing, main idea and details, and what do we think is the most important part of the story or book and why.
Please make sure the reading logs are completed each week in the Student agendas.
Guided reading groups: I meet with these groups 3 - 4 times every week.
Daily 5: Activities include guided reading groups, read to self, read to someone, working on writing, word work, listening center, and math activities.
Poems: Every Thursday we read our weekly poem(s).
